Lost Control of my Car! Please Advice.?

I was on the highway. It was not raining at the time but it had rained hard a few minutes before so road was wet. I got on an exit ramp and started to slow down. When suddenly I saw a large piece of mud on my right side. Before I knew it, my car began going to the right violently and then I tried making it go left which it did but way too much so I tried making it go right and then left again until it went so far left that my car which was perpendicular to the road started to skid. When it started to skid on its side I decided to let go of the wheel and just hope for the best. my car ended up doing a whole 180 degree turn from its original position and I realized that I was on the ramp facing the wrong way. Fortunately the driver behind me had the good sense to stop and put his hazard lights on. I avoided a close one . I felt fortunate I did not fall off the ramp and that it did not happen somewhere more dangerous such as the highway itself. I will have my first born child in a couple of months and I cannot stand the idea of him growing up without a father. Please advice me as to what are the best techniques to regain control of my car once I feel like I am loosing control and let me know what type of maintenance and or upgrades I should do to my car in order to lower the chances that something like this will happen to me again.
