What is this called...?? HELP!! Doctors?
It is a deformity ociated with an inflamed bursa called a bunion. The deformity that develops is called hallux valgus deformity, and involves development of a bone spur (exostosis) at the mtp joint (joint between the 1st metatarsal and the proximal phalanx of the great toe). What you see now is the exostosis of the distal 1st metatarsal (foot bone that joins with big toe bone). As the deformity progresses, the exostosis enlarges and changes occur in the joint, which forces the great toe to deviate laterally, until it may actually overlap the 2nd toe. Some never progress to this degree, and others continue to be problematic and ultimately require surgical reconstruction to correct the deformity, called hallux valgus plasty, or bunionectomy and hallux valgus plasty. Osteotomy to remove excess bone is also typically performed. There is a prolonged period of recovery following the surgery, so some postpone it for as long as possible. I would make an appointment to consult with an orthopedic surgeon to determine your options. Some people see podiatrists for this, but in my experience, an orthopedic surgeon is a better choice for optimum results.
