Tapping our phone lines?????

the government has the right to tap into our phone lines? i was told this today by my teacher and he said that they tap into our phone lines and cell lines, they even read our texts!!! is this tru? i know since we are in war we dont have constitutional rights but this is kind of crazy! What other things do they do???! can we even use the bathroom without them nkowing about it???!!
