I am looking for a childrens book?

this is a book that i have bn trying to find since i was a kid. It is about a witch and she hides underneath the stairs and a little girls is afraid to go down the stairs and then stuff happens. lol. i was wondering if anyone knew a book that had a story line like that. if you have the title then please answer this or if u have any ideas:) thanks!
